2007 Population Estimates

To determine population estimates, biologists conduct the Waterfowl Breeding Ground Population and Habitat Survey, the largest and most comprehensive survey of its kind in the world. The survey samples 1.3 million square miles across the north-central United States, south-central and northern Canada, and Alaska. The survey estimates the number of ducks in the continent's most important nesting grounds.

The 2007 population estimates for common duck species were either above the 2006 estimates, or were similar or unchanged. Mallard, Blue-winged Teal, American Wigeon, Gadwall, and Northern Shoveler populations were above 2006 estimates.

Northern Pintail, Green-winged Teal, Scaup, Redhead and Canvasback populations were similar or unchanged.

Canvasback Population Estimates

Canvasback Population Estimates

Estimated abundances of canvasbacks in 2007 (A. valisineria; 0.9 million) was similar to 2006, but was >50% above the long-term average.

Redhead Population Estimates

Redhead Population Estimates

Estimated abundance of redheads (Aythya americana; 1.0 million) was similar to 2006, but was >50% above the long-term average.

Northern Shoveler Population Estimates

Northern Shoveler Population Estimates

Estimated abundances of Northern shovelers (A. clypeata; 4.6 million) were also higher in 2007 than in 2006 (+24%) and well above their long-term averages (+106%).

Scaup Population Estimates

Scaup Population Estimates

Estimates for scaup (Aythya affinis and A. marila combined; 3.5 million) were unchanged from those of 2006, and remained below the long-term average (-33%).

Gadwall Population Estimates

Gadwall Population Estimates

Estimated abundances of gadwall (A. strepera; 3.4 million) were higher than those of last year (+19%) and well above the long-term average (+96%).

American Wigeon Population Estimates

American Wigeon Population Estimates

Estimated abundance of American wigeon (A. americana; 2.8 million) was 29% greater in 2007 than 2006,  but similar to the long-term average.

Green-winged Teal Population Estimates

Green-winged Teal Population Estimates

Estimated abundance of green-winged teal in 2007 (A. crecca; 2.9 million) was similar to 2006 estimates, but was >50% above the long-term average.

Blue-winged Teal Population Estimates

Blue-winged Teal Population Estimates

Blue-winged teal (A. discors) estimated abundance was 6.7 million birds in 2007, the third highest since 1955, 14% greater than the 2006 estimate of 5.9 million birds, and 48% above the long-term average.

Northern Pintail Population Estimates

Northern Pintail Population Estimates

Estimates for Northern pintails (Anas acuta; 3.3 million) were unchanged from those of 2006, and remained below the long-term average (-19%).

Mallard Population Estimates

Mallard Population Estimates

Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) abundance was 8.3 million birds in 2007, which was 14% above the 2006 estimate of 7.3 million birds and 11% above the long-term average.
